Curriculum

IF0A9142The Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage Curriculum is followed by our Nursery and Reception classes. It is divided into seven areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Development
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

The emphasis in our Foundation Stage classes is on learning through practical activities because children at this stage in their development learn best through doing things and seeing
things happen.

The National Curriculum

All children from Year 1 – Year 6 follow the National Curriculum:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Design and Technology
  • Computing
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and Design
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Personal, Social and Health Education
  • Modern Foreign Language ( In Key Stage 2 main emphasis is on French)

We teach a creative, topic-based curriculum which links subjects in a meaningful way for the children. The children often have a lot of input into designing each topic.

Special Educational Needs

At Belswains we place great emphasis on supporting each child to fulfil their potential. If your child is identified as having a special educational need we will use a variety of strategies, e.g. differentiated work within their classroom or extra support in a small group or individual setting, to cater for their particular needs. Our SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) monitors the progress of all children with special needs, teaches individual children and small groups and gives advice to class teachers, teaching assistants
and parents.

Gifted and Talented Provision

We use a variety of strategies to meet the needs of children who are gifted and talented, e.g. differentiated work within their classroom or working in a small group with a teacher or teaching assistant. Our local secondary school, Longdean, provides master classes and additional teaching for Key Stage 2 children who are gifted mathematicians. Talented athletes in Y5 and Y6 compete in a district athletics competition each year.
